National Food Security Act (NFSA) Survey 2016

The basic purpose of this survey is to assess the implementation of the National Food Security Act (NFSA) in six of India’s poorest states: Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal. The survey actually focuses on one component of NFSA: food subsidies under the Public Distribution System (PDS).

In each state, there were two sample Blocks (in separate districts). In each Block, the basic task was to do a house-to-house survey in three or four randomly-selected villages. In each village, there were three major tasks:

(a) a Village Questionnaire with general details of the village as well as of the local PDS shop;

(b) a Household Checklist for house-to-house verification of ration cards and PDS purchases;

(c) annotation of the NFSA List, if available.
